When a person is struggling with addiction, their family members also carry the weight of the consequences that follow this disease. Due to that fact, loved ones often experience a lower quality of life in many aspects – psychologically, financially, and spiritually. As a result, families may take on codependent, or enabling, types of behavior. When an addict is going through the recovery process, it is essential for all family members to recover themselves. This includes making the effort to understand their enabling behaviors, learning to forgive, and attending family rehab meetings and/or family counseling.
